Leading today’s Morning Briefing: Mariners trade Eugenio Suarez to Diamondbacks
On Wednesday, the Seattle Mariners traded their starting third baseman Eugenio Suarez to the Arizona Diamondbacks for reliever Carlos Vargas and catcher Seby Zavala. Suarez provided back-to-back impact seasons for the Mariners as a cog of that offense and was a key member of rebuilding the culture in the Mariners’ clubhouse.
In return, the Mariners received a backup catcher with strong framing and blocking skills in Zavala and a hard-throwing reliever with little to no control in Vargas.
Outside of wishing the Nationals gave Jerry Dipoto a call about Suarez, why does this matter for the Nationals? Well, Jon Morosi of MLB Network suggested on Twitter that the Mariners could be interested in adding Jeimer Candelario. Earlier this offseason, the Nationals also expressed interest in adding Candelario to their roster. While you can make an argument that Candelario doesn’t necessarily fit the roster long-term, adding another suitor to his services will likely drive up his price. You can also make the argument that the Mariners adding Candelario doesn’t make much sense and is mostly a lateral move, but what do I know.
