World Baseball Classic Day 1

⚾ DUGOUT DISPATCH

Here are some of the teams’ game recaps from a couple of the games from Day #1 of the World Baseball Classic. This evening, the Nationals will face Team Venezuela, and we will have the game preview for that matchup on the site later today.

📊 THE BOX SCORE:

  • Team USA dominated the San Francisco Giants in a 15-1 win that included a total of 12 strikeouts from Paul Skenes and the bullpen, as well as a pair of home runs from Alex Bregman and Roman Anthony

  • Team Dominican Republic won an offense-heavy bout against the Detroit Tigers 12-4, powered by home runs from Juan Soto, Manny Machado, and Junior Caminero

  • Team Israel won a pitchers' duel against the Miami Marlins 1-0, with both teams’ pitching lineups racking up a combined 18 strikeouts

  • Team Japan lost 4-3 to the Orix Buffaloes in a back-and-forth competition that ended in a close play at the plate that could’ve sent the game to extra innings if not for Buffaloes catcher Mori Tomoya

    🗣️ LOCKER ROOM LORE

With all the teams getting the first opportunity to show what they’re made of, it becomes a showcase for some of the teams we could be seeing make a real competitive attempt at an appearance in the WBC final. While most of the usual suspects had good games—Teams USA, Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico all won handily—there were many others, like Team Mexico and Team Canada, who also showed out for their first games. This could lead to there being multiple dark-horse teams by the time the Classic gets to the tournament stage of competition.

  • On Thursday, the 5th, the Nats face off against the New York Mets for a second time this Spring Training at 1:05 PM ET at CACTI Park of the Palm Beaches

  • Both games can be watched via Nationals.tv, and the game against the Mets can be listened to on WSH Audio through the MLB app

    🗣️ LOCKER ROOM LORE

The break that Tuesday gave the Nationals could prove to be just what the team needed at this particular point in Spring Training. Even though their recent games have tended to air more on the side of decent, some of them have been less than stellar. This day to regroup and take a moment could be just what they needed to come back revitalized for the games ahead.
