With last night’s extra inning victory, the Nats are now 56-60 on the year, back in position to once again, push above the .500 threshold. Last night’s win was much needed, and felt a little empowering for the Nats, as they finally broke their losing streak and gave themselves a chance to split the series tonight. Still in 4th in the NL East, it is right now or never for the Nats to begin their playoff push, as for any chance at a Wild Card, they have to go positive in the month of August. Only 5.5 games currently out of the last NL Wild Card spot, it truly does seem that they are one month away from being in the thick of a late season playoff picture; something they haven’t seen since 2019.

In last night’s win, it seemed the Nats management is finally starting to work out the best lineup with the new roster. Obviously now missing core pieces like Luis Garcia Jr. and Curtis Mead from the trade deadline, the Nats have had to call up new young guys to fill the holes left behind. Last night, it finally seemed it was coming together, as Brady House hit a late pinch hit clutch homer, continuing his case to be featured in the lineup more consistently than Vivas. Abimelec Ortiz, who spent most of his time in Triple-A this season has also been consistent since his trade deadline call up, able to hit an early single yesterday, a homer in the game before, as he tries to cement his spot consistently in the 2 hole. Doing all this while James Wood is out on injury, the Nats young offensive core looks like they will be just fine, despite losing some of the favorites.

The Nats fan favorite All-Star outfielder James Wood suffered an injury that made him leave the game the other night, but luckily it doesn’t seem too major. Wood had not missed a single game due to injury since 2024 prior to this week, but even superheroes aren’t injury proof. Luckily however, despite being place on IL, the results from the test came back seemingly positive, and there is trending hope that Wood could easily be be back before the month is over. Also adding to the post trade deadline roster shake up, starter Zack Littell was DFA’d yesterday following his rough performance against Philly. It is clear the Nats are ready to figure out this new lineup and rotation to push for a Wild Card Spot, even if it has a lot of new names that weren’t there to start the year.

Key Storyline: Can Mikolas have a decent outing as the Nats look to split the 4 game series in Philly and turn their momentum around?

The Rochester Red Wings, the Nats Triple-A affiliate, improved to 64-44 on the season with an emphatic 8-1 victory over the RailRiders. Rochester broke open a tight game with back-to-back home runs from Leandro Pineda and Maxwell Romero Jr. in the fifth before adding three more runs in the ninth. On the mound, Jackson Kent tossed 5.2 innings of one-run baseball to earn his eighth win of the season.

The Harrisburg Senators, the Nats Double-A affiliate, fell to 52-51 on the year after dropping both doubleheader games to the Baysox on Wednesday. Branden Boissiere supplied the lone run with a sixth-inning solo homer, but the Senators managed just four hits and went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position. Let’s hope they can get back on track later in the week to pull the series back.

The Wilmington Blue Rocks, the Nats High-A affiliate, dropped to 52-50 on the season after surrendering six runs in the ninth inning of a 10-8 loss to the Cyclones. Wilmington carried an 8-4 lead into the final frame before the Cyclones rallied for the dramatic comeback. Nats number one overall pick and prospect Eli Willits still managed a great game in the loss, going 2-5 with 2 runs and 2 RBIs.

The Fredericksburg Nationals, the Nats Single-A affiliate, improved to 64-39 on the year with a 5-4 walk-off victory over the Shoerbirds in 10 innings. After the Shorebirds tied the game with a three-run seventh, the FredNats prevailed in extra innings when they pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the 10th. Luke Dickerson homered and tripled, and Hunter Hines drove in two runs with a pair of doubles.
