Breaking News: Nationals Bolster Bullpen with Signing of Jorge López

Updated with the Nats Report Perspective:

While the Nationals may be in a rebuilding phase, adding a proven reliever like López can provide a significant boost to their bullpen. Last year, López's elite fastball command and ability to avoid hard contact on his slider pushed him to a sub-3.00 era. While command can be tricky to maintain, López has enough of a track record to be confident he will be a rock in a bullpen reeling from the loss of Hunter Harvey, Kyle Finnegan, and Robert García.

Washington, D.C. - The Washington Nationals announced today the signing of right-handed pitcher Jorge López to a one-year contract. Right-handed pitcher Amos Willingham has been designated for assignment to make room on the roster.

López, 31, brings a wealth of Major League experience to the Nationals. In 2024, he split time between the New York Mets and Chicago Cubs, posting a solid 2.89 ERA with 50 strikeouts in 52 relief appearances. Notably, he enjoyed a 14-game scoreless streak, showcasing his ability to shut down opposing batters.

A former American League All-Star (2022), López has pitched for seven different organizations throughout his career. Since transitioning to a full-time reliever in 2022, he has been a consistent contributor, accumulating 30 saves and 171 strikeouts.

The Milwaukee Brewers originally drafted López in the second round of the 2011 MLB Draft.
