Team of the Week: Rochester Red Wings

The Rochester Red Wings took a long trip to Jacksonville, Florida, this past week and took care of business against the Jumbo Shrimp, winning four of six games, ultimately winning the team of the week honors.

It’s no secret that the 2025 campaign has fallen short of expectations in the Flower City and throughout the Nationals organization — but a recent trade deadline acquisition may have provided the spark this team needed.

Outfielder Christian Franklin, acquired in the deal that sent Michael Soroka to the Chicago Cubs, has been red-hot since joining the Red Wings. In 24 games with Rochester, Franklin is slashing .296/.381/.459 and is quickly becoming a key piece in the lineup.

During the recent series in Jacksonville, Franklin continued his surge, hitting .308 with a home run and seven RBIs. He capped off a strong August with four homers and 19 RBIs, providing a much-needed boost to the reeling Rochester offense.

On the pitching side, left-handed starter Andrew Alvarez has been dominant as of late, pitching to the tune of a 2.96 ERA in August, with a .188 opponents’ batting average. The Nationals rewarded him by promoting him to the big leagues this past week.

The Red Wings have three series left on the season and who knows how this roller coaster season finishes, but as of late, they are playing some good ball.

Daily Report From Rochester:

JACKSONVILLE, FL — The Rochester Red Wings came up just short in their series finale against the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp on Sunday night, falling 6-5 to close out the six-game set and season series.

Jacksonville struck early with a run in the first and three more in the second, capitalizing on walks, stolen bases, and a two-run single from Jacob Berry. The Red Wings answered with a run in the second and a solo homer from Franklin in the third, but a towering two-run shot by Kemp Alderman in the fifth gave the Jumbo Shrimp a 6-2 lead.

Rochester chipped away with runs in the sixth and seventh, including Franklin’s sac fly and an RBI single by José Tena, cutting the lead to one. The Wings threatened again in the ninth, but managed just one hit, Tena’s third of the night, and couldn’t push across the tying run.

Trey Lipscomb, Francisco Mejía, and Tena all had multi-hit games with one RBI apiece, while Franklin hit his 12th home run of the season and his seventh multi-RBI performance as a Red Wing.

Starter Andry Lara lasted just 1.2 innings, allowing four runs on two hits and four walks. Rochester’s bullpen combined for 6.1 innings of two-run ball, led by Daison Acosta’s two scoreless frames.

The Red Wings (52-77) now head to Memphis to open a six-game set against the Redbirds, beginning Tuesday, September 2, at 7:45 p.m. EDT.

GREENSBORO, NC — The Greensboro Grasshoppers exploded for three runs in the first inning and never looked back, cruising to a 7-1 win over the Wilmington Blue Rocks on Sunday night at First National Bank Field.

Daily Report From Fredericksburg:

LYNCHBURG, VA — The Fredericksburg Nationals squandered a late lead and fell 4-2 to the Lynchburg Hillcats on Sunday, as Lynchburg clinched the series win at Bank of the James Stadium.

The Fred-Nats led 2-0 after Brenner Cox launched a two-run homer in the fifth inning, but the bullpen couldn’t hold. Ryan Minckler surrendered three runs in the eighth inning after allowing the first three batters to reach base, flipping the game in Lynchburg’s favor.

Fredericksburg managed just four hits in the game and went quietly in the final three innings, going down in order from the sixth through the eighth. In the ninth, Luke Dickerson drew a walk, but Eli Willits struck out, ending his hitting streak and the game.

R.J. Sales delivered his best outing since joining the Fred-Nats, tossing five scoreless innings and extending the staff’s scoreless streak to 17 innings in the series. Angel Roman allowed the first Hillcats run in the sixth before the bullpen collapsed in the eighth.

Fredericksburg (61-61) returns home Tuesday to begin its final regular season series, a pivotal seven-game set against Carolina, with a two-game lead in the standings. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. EDT at Virginia Credit Union Stadium.
