Josiah Gray Placed on 60-Day IL

Via Washington Nationals

⚾ DUGOUT DISPATCH

Josiah Gray and the Nationals faced another setback on the pitcher’s road back to the mound as he was diagnosed with a right flexor strain and placed on the 60-day IL. This extends his time in getting back to the majors even further, as he won’t actually play until at least late May.

📊 THE BOX SCORE:

  • Monday evening, the Nationals announced that they were placing right-handed pitcher Josiah Gray on the 60-day injured list with a right flexor strain

  • This means that Gray, who was recently sent down to the Triple-A Rochester Red Wings, will not see actual play until at least late May, while not having pitched since April of 2024

  • This comes after he had a promising Spring Training, saying he felt healthy again despite his velocity not being back to what it was before undergoing Tommy John surgery, though the right-hander seemed confident it would get back to where it was

  •  This isn’t Gray’s first flexor strain, as that is what he was initially diagnosed with back in April of 2024, before he eventually had to get surgery on the same arm and miss the rest of the ‘24 season and all of 2025

    🗣️ LOCKER ROOM LORE

While the hope and current outlook is that this injury will not cause the right-hander to need surgery yet again, this is very much a major setback for both Josiah Gray and the Nationals. The road for him to come back to the majors is now expected to be two and a half years at minimum, and even if he does make it back after all of that, there are still question marks about his performance. Chief among them is whether the injuries to his arm and rust to his game will impact and hinder him more than they already have, as well as just how much impact they could have. Only time will tell if the performances on par with the 2023 era Josiah Gray will ever be seen again on the mound at Nationals Park.

Spring Training Wrap Up

Via Washington Nationals

⚾ DUGOUT DISPATCH

As the Nationals rebuild, Spring Training is the perfect opportunity for both further development and showcasing how far the team has come since the end of last season. And this Spring Training did just that in multiple areas, pitching in particular.

📊 THE BOX SCORE:

  • Despite losing their last Spring Training game on Monday against the Baltimore Orioles 2-0, the Nationals ended Spring Training on a relatively good note for a team on the rebuild

  • Finishing 14-11, the Nats showed strength and growth throughout Spring Training against teams that had better records and more well-known lineups, such as the New York Yankees and New York Mets

  • Their most notable run of games was their five-game win streak from March 7-12, beating those teams in both strong pitching games and blowouts powered by strong hitting

  • The shining star of this Spring Training was definitely the pitching, even as pieces like Zack Littell got added at the last minute, with multiple shutouts and one-run games behind starters and a bullpen that recorded strikeouts nearly in the double digits for most games

    🗣️ LOCKER ROOM LORE

“I think there are some hard metrics, and then some softer factors. One, it’s like, on the major-league front, our players’ production — is it outpacing what we thought it was going to be? Right? In that, are they going to project as better players in future years? Same thing on the minor-league side. How good are we at basically developing valuable players for the major-league roster, trades, or whatever it might be, beyond what we would have thought the natural progression would have been?” said president of baseball operations Paul Toboni on what lets him know the team’s on the right track for this coming season.
