The Nats now sit at 55-59 on the season and 4th in the NL East after last night’s win, due to the rough weekend sweep and continued struggle. However, still in the hunt for an NL Wild Card Spot, their pitching acquisitions at the deadline could be the change they need to push back up the standings and hunt to end their 7 year playoff drought. If they’re going to make a surge, it feels they have to do it with this new roster in the month of August. If they can get back into the race going into September, all bets are on for them to make the playoffs.

The first major trade of the Nats deadline came with the Nats acquiring 24 year old LHP Connelly Early from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for Curtis Mead. Early has had a great season so far, and is one of the most promising young arms in the league. And now, despite currently sitting on 15 day-IL, Early made his has first Nats bullpen session last week, and is looking like a full recovery within the next month is imminent and likely. Despite losing a streaky, fan-favorite bat in Mead, this trade began the Nats push towards acquiring pitching at the deadline, seemingly noting it is the one thing that has held them back majorly this season so far.

The second major trade of the Nats deadline came Sunday with the Nats trading major fan-favorite Luis Garcia Jr. to the Yankees in exchange for 4 pitchers. Although Garcia was having his best season of his career so far, and creating much-needed offensive production, the Nats needed pitching much more. In exchange for Garcia from the Yankees, the Nats received Jake Bird, Jack Cebert, Yovanny Cruz, and Ben Grable. Grable and Cebert were both top 30 prospects for the Yankees, but more excitingly Cruz will bring a pop the Nats bullpen desperately need, showcasing pitches that top 100 mph, a tool they are yet to have. Bird has also been a veteran arm for the Yankees, pitching in his 5th major league season for them, and hopefully providing much needed experience to the Nats relievers.

The last major trade of the Nats deadline came yesterday right before, when the Nats traded this year’s All-Star pitcher Foster Griffin. In a somewhat expected trade that stings for Nats fans, they were forced to deal away their ace from this year in exchange for 3 pitchers (LHP Will Dion, LHP Josh Hartle (was CLE's No. 25 prospect; now WSH No. 29) and RHP Kendeglys Virguez) and outfielder Nick Mitchell. It is safe to say after this deal the Nats starting rotation will be expected to heavily step up to fill Griffins shoes. This Nats bullpen and roster will begin to look completely new in the coming week, and it will quickly show whether these moves will help the Nats push for the playoffs, or put them deeper into their 7 year drought and rebuild.
