Game Story Line & Notes
The Washington Nationals look to avoid their first series sweep of the 2024 season at the hands of the Philadelphia Phillies.
Last Night. The Washington Nationals lost 5-2 against the Philadelphia Phillies last night. RHP Jake Irvin got the start and the loss. Irvin gave up a three-run home run to JT Realmuto, his second of the year, on a fly ball to left-center field, scoring both Trea Turner and Bryce Harper (note the irony in this situation). The Nationals would score two runs in the bottom of the third, thanks to a Joey Gallo home run to right center field, his second of the season, scoring Lane Thomas, but that is all the scoring for the Nationals. Per EliasSports, Gallo joined Ryan Zimmerman, Jayson Werth, Adam Lind, Adam LaRoche, and Alfonso Soriano to hit their 200th homerun wearing a Nationals jersey.
Thank you, #37
It's non-game related but still important to the Washington Nationals. Last night, the Washington Nationals put on their transaction log and picked up by Talk Nats that RHP Stephen Strasburg had retired from Major League Baseball.
We will have in-depth coverage and a look back on Strasburg’s career with the Washington Nationals, but in the meantime, Strasburg will end his career with a 3.24 ERA and a win-loss record of 1113-62. He also appeared in 247 games, pitching 1470.0 innings and recording 1,723 strikeouts. He also was the 2019 World Series MVP.
The right-hander has thrown just 4 ⅔ innings since June 9, 2022, due to injuries. [Read Richard’s Thank You letter to Strasburg here.]
Jake Irvin Returns to the mound. Yesterday afternoon, RHP Jake Irvin returned to the mound in search of his first win of the 2024 series. Yesterday afternoon, Irvin pitched 6.0 innings, striking out five, walking one, and giving up four runs on five hits. He has an ERA of 5.73 and is 0-1 on the season. Irvin pitched a total of 93 with 58 of them being strikes.
Oppo Research. The Washington Nationals will face LHP Cristopher Sánchez for the first time this year.
