After Nick Senzel sustained an injury before Thursday afternoon's game, the Washington Nationals opted to call up infielder and prospect Trey Lipscomb as his replacement. During spring training, Lipscomb showcased his prowess by batting an impressive .400 with seven RBIs, one home run, and 20 hits over 55 plate appearances in 21 games.

    • Lipscomb was Washington’s 2023 Minor League Defensive Player of the Year and the winner of the Rawlings Minor League Gold Glove Award for third basemen. In his first full professional season in 2023, he led Nationals Minor Leaguers with 139 hits and 29 doubles while ranking fourth in average (.272), and RBI (72) and tied for fourth in home runs (14).

Quotables

  • “But I think for me, I’ll try to take the positives out of today. Obviously you have to come back to work here in two days and really dig deep into sequencing and location on some things and try to give the team a better chance to win on my next start. I don’t want to dwell on it too much, but to say it’ll be in and out of my mind that’s not the truth. … It’s about coming back on the next day and getting back to work. I know I can do it -- I’ve had bad starts before and have been able to rebound.” - Josiah Gray on his first Opening Day Start on Thursday afternoon.
  • Overall, look, it was his first Opening Day [start]… We get him settled down, walked two guys, which isn’t bad … We’ve got to put this one behind us and come back Saturday.” -Manager Dave Martinez on Josiah Gray’s rocky start in Thursday’s Opening Day.
