Game Story Line & Notes

  • Yesterday afternoon, Washington Nationals Prospect Dylan Crews hit his first home run of spring training in a 9-3 win over the Marlins. The home run went to straightaway center field, came off the bat at 102.4 mph, and landed 393 feet away.

  • Not to be left out, James Wood continued hitting during Spring Training. Wood “ran” from first to third on a bloop single hit by Joey Meneses to shallow left field. Daily highlights involving Wood have been one of the highlights of Spring Training.

  • Patrick Corbin followed up his previous strong outing with another encouraging start. Over his four innings of work, Corbin went 1-2-3 three times and retired the first seven batters in order. He also recorded two strikeouts to close out his second inning of work. Corbin now has a 4.15 ERA, 0.923 WHIP, 10 strikeouts, and no walks this spring.

  • Quotable(s):

    • “It felt pretty good…I was hoping a little sooner than later, but it felt good to get a barrel in and help the team win today. I think the off-day helped a lot, just physically and mentally, to kind of get the feet underneath me again. But yeah, it was a great day all around: pitching defensively, and the bats were really hot today. So it was a great day,” Dylan Crews on his first homerun of Spring Training.

    • “Get some ground balls and some easy fly balls. I think when you throw strikes, that forces them to swing and I'm able to mix things up. I mixed up the slider and the cutter and the fastball well. And threw some changeups early. So just a good combination of everything.” - Patrick Corbin on his outing against the Miami Marlins.

    • “The biggest thing is just to be grateful for every day. Be grateful that you get to play the game, be around these guys, and compete at the highest level. It's really cool.”—Jake Irvin, reflecting on his first extended stint in the majors.

On the bump for the Nationals: RHP Jake Irvin

Today, the Washington Nationals will send out RHP Jake Irvin for his first start of Spring Training. Irvin’s results over his past two outings have not been so great. Irvin gave up a run on two hits while striking out four over two innings during his last outing on February 25th against the Marlins.

More recently, on Friday against the Houston Astros, Irvin was charged with seven runs (only six earned) on five hits, which included a home run.

Let’s see if Irvin can come out and start the game on the right foot for the Nationals.
