Game Preview: Nationals look to bounce back after dropping last night's game to the Cardinals last night 4-1

The Washington Nationals continue their road trip and series against the St. Louis Cardinals tonight.

St. Louis, Mo - Last night the Washington Nationals lost to the St. Louis Cardinals 4-1. Tonight, they look to bounce back as they face LHP Jordan Montgomery. Montgomery is 8-3 with a 3.62 over 37 games pitched for the Cardinals.

The Nationals will send RHP Cory Abbott who is 0-2 with a 4.39 ERA to the mound to face the Cardinals.

Last night...

Paolo Espino allowed three runs, all in the fourth inning, on seven hits in 5.0 innings of work. OF Joey Meneses continued the hot start to his career adding two more hits. Ildemaro Vargas also added a hit and RBI to his totals with Washington.

Game Notes:

  • Young Guns... The Nationals are 11-11 over their last 22 games and are 7-6 over their last 13 road contests. Washington has won five of the last seven games overall. Washington has earned at least a series split in their last three road series, all against potential playoff teams. (2-2 in San Diego, 1-1 in Seattle, 2-1 in New York-NL). Washington is 6-5 in their last 11 games against teams currently in playoff position.

Meneses has hit safely in 26 of the 30 games. Meneses's 42 hits through his first 30 games are the most by any rookie through his first 30 games in franchise history.
  • Start me up before you go go.. Since snapping a Major League record, 43 game streak without a win by a starting pitcher on August 28. Nationals starters have won five of the last nine games, the most by a National League club over that span. Over the last nine games, Nationals starters are 5-3 with a 3.70 ERA and are holding opposing hitters to a .239 average.
