The Washington Nationals avoid a sweep by the Cincinnati Reds by winning 3-2, thanks to a solo home run by Ildemaro Vargas in the bottom fifth.

The Washington Nationals avoided a sweep by the Cincinnati Reds by winning 3-2, thanks to a solo home run by Ildemaro Vargas in the bottom of the fifth inning off Cincinnati Reds pitcher Nick Lodolo.

The win helped the Nationals snap their MLB-record 43 consecutive games without a starting pitcher earning a win. The last win that a starting pitcher had was on July 6, 2022, when RHP Josiah Gray pitched to the win.

Patrick Corbin pitched well this afternoon, going six innings, giving up one earned run on four hits, and he struck out five Reds. Kyle Finnegan got his eighth save of the season, moving his ERA to 3.12. Corbin pitched a total of 82 pitches with 52 strikes.

On the offense, the Nationals catcher Riley Adams got an RBI (6) single that scored Joey Meneses. Talking about Meneses, he extended his hitting streak to eight games with two hits during the game. The Nationals went 1-4 with runners in scoring position and only left four on base throughout the game. This season, Nelson Cruz got his 62nd RBI, and Vargas got his 11th RBI.

Erick Fedde will get his second start since coming off the IR. In his last start on August 23, 2022, against the Mariners, Fedde went five innings giving up two runs over three hits. Fedde struck out six and walked one.

Wednesday, August 31, 2022: Oakland Athletics vs. Washington Nationals; 7:05 p.m. EDT

RHP Anibal Sanchez (0-5; 5.72 ERA).

Sanchez is still looking for his first win of the 2022 season. The right-hander has yet to get a win this season despite pitching well over the past three games. In his last start on August 24, 2022, against the Mariners, Sanchez went four innings giving up no runs on only two hits. Before that start, Sanchez pitched five innings, giving up only one run on one hit. He struck out four in that start against the Padres back in mid-August.

Thursday, September 1, 2022: Oakland Athletics vs. Washington Nationals; 4:05 p.m. EDT

RHP Cade Cavalli (0-1; 14.54 ERA)

RHP Cade Cavalli will get the second start of his MLB career. In the first start of his career against the Reds. Cavalli allowed seven runs, six hits, and two walks, struck out six, and hit three batters across 99 pitches.
