Yes, the Nationals beat the Atlanta Braves in this weekend’s series. However, the Nationals did get swept by the visiting New York Mets. Either way, that’s in the past. Now, looking forward, the Nationals need to take a step forward and beat teams that they are supposed to beat, and that starts tonight when they face the struggling Detroit Tigers.

Entering tonight’s game, the Tigers are in second to last place in the A.L. Central with a record of 32-33 (one game under .500) and just finished a series against the Milwaukee Brewers, where they lost two of three. The Nationals just won three out of four against a high-powered Atlanta Braves, and now the task is to keep that momentum moving forward.

After this quick three-game series, the Nationals will return to Washington, D.C., to face the Mimi Marlins, who currently occupy the last spot in the N.L. East with a record of 22-43. Who knows their record as they face another team under the Nationals in the standings: the New York Mets. Either way, the Marlins are coming to town, and the Nationals should take advantage of their struggle.

If the Nationals want to make some noise and turn some heads, they need to come out of June with a winning record, and it shouldn’t be so hard to do so. The Nationals’ record in June is 4-5, one game under .500. If the Nationals can end the month of June with a winning record, that would be the first time this season that they would finish the month with a winning record. If the Nationals’ would like to make the playoffs or even move forward in their “re-tool,” that would be a good achievement.

The Nationals should receive some pitching reinforcements with the possible return of two important pieces of their starting rotation, RHP Josiah Gray and RHP Cade Cavalli. This will prompt a decision on what to do with the young pitchers (i.e., LHP Mitchell Parker and LHP DJ Herz) who have been holding down the fort. Most importantly, the Nationals will face a significant decision regarding LHP Patrick Corbin, who has once again been struggling on the mound.

The next couple of weeks should be full of wins, and hopefully, at the end of the month, we can revisit this article and see where the team stands. Let’s hope they make some noise and turn heads with their record.

The upcoming games represent a pivotal stretch for the Nationals this season. If the Nationals can take advantage of their schedule, play to their potential, and maintain focus, they can improve their standing in the Wild Card race and set themselves up for a successful season.
