Today is Another CBA Negotiation “Deadline,” Between MLB and the MLBPA and there is a lot of work to be done
Today is another “deadline" day and from the look of it, deadline Tuesday might become a weekly thing, with MLB officially canceling games on Wednesday as long as the CBA negotiations drag on. Since today is Tuesday, let's just take a quick look at where things stand.
More Canceled Games? If there is no deal by tonight, MLB says it will cancel another week of games. It has been reported that MLB is already offering to make up the already canceled games if a deal is done by tonight. However, if no deal is made tonight, MLB is telling the players they will lose at least two weeks' page which can be calculated to a loss of $300 million for the players. Yeah, that's a lot of money to lose.
Yesterday, Evan Drellich from the Athletic reported that according to his sources MLB offered to start the CBT at $228 million, going to $238 million by end of the deal. But the rest of the proposal is not yet known, and the league’s increase is said to have major strings attached. Players' last known ask was $238m, finishing at $263m. MLB was at $220m previously. Jeff Passan has a good write-up on where things stand heading into today, where there might be cautious optimism, but he also advises that the existing gaps are still too large to think a deal today is likely.
