No sweep for Washington as they fall to Seattle 9-5 (Updated)

Washington D.C. — The Washington Nationals lost 9-5 against the Seattle Mariners today. Washington sent LHP Patrick Corbin to the mound, where he pitched 6.0 innings, giving up 4 hits and allowing 4 runs. His record is now 1-5. Corbin's performance in the top of the first inning was strong, but as his pitch count increased, he became less effective.

He struggled in the top of the fourth but regained his form in the top of the fifth. On his 45th pitch in the top of the fourth, Patrick Corbin allowed a 423-foot home run to Julio Rodriguez, making the score 2-0 in favor of the Seattle Mariners. Later in the same inning, Corbin gave up another home run, this time to Ty France, putting the Mariners ahead 4-0.

Jacob Barnes pitched one inning with complete confidence, allowing no runs, hits, or walks, and recording no strikeouts. The first two outs were ground outs, and the last out was a pop-out catch made by CJ Abrams. Barnes did not return for the next inning. Dylan Floro took over and pitched for an inning and two-thirds, giving up three hits and two earned runs, bringing his ERA to 1.09. The Nationals then transitioned to Jordan Weems, who pitched for the remainder of the game, allowing three hits, three earned runs, one walk, and recording two strikeouts.

Joey Gallo hit a home run in the bottom of the fifth inning, putting the Nationals on the board. In the end of the sixth inning, a critical review by the crew chief determined fan interference, resulting in an out and ending the inning.

The offense has a dramatic seventh but fails to complete a comeback.

To start the top of the seventh, Ildemaro Vargas attempted a simple suicide squeeze, and with no one covering first base, he managed to get on base to start the inning. The next batter, Nick Senzel, hit one to right field to get on base, allowing the Nationals to work with no outs in the bottom of the seventh. This allowed Gallo to come up to bat, trying to advance the runners or get them home. However, Gallo ended up striking out on all three pitches. With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Keibert Ruiz got on base, loading the bases. Jesse Winker then came up to bat and hit a hard-hit sack fly out, allowing the runners to move up and Vargas to come home and score, cutting the score to 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh.

The last time CJ Abrams hit a home run was on April 29.2024 However, that all changed today Abrams hit a home run to take the lead in the bottom of the seventh with two outs, the ball traveling 406 feet Putting the nationals up by one run.

Julio Rodríguez of the Seattle Mariners tied the game in the top of the eighth inning with a single up the middle. Later in the same inning, Ty France hit a single, allowing Rodriguez to come home and score, giving Seattle the lead. Rodríguez proved to be a powerful offensive weapon in this game, recording four RBIs on three hits for the day.

Up next, the Nationals head on the road.

The Nationals will start a four-game series against the Atlanta Braves tomorrow. The Nationals will send left-handed pitcher Mitchell Parker, with an ERA of 3.32, to the mound, while the Braves will send right-handed Charlie Morton, who has an ERA of 3.35.
