⚾ DUGOUT DISPATCH

Baseball is officially back, and the Nationals started off with a bang! The Nats kicked off Spring Training with a sweep of a split-squad doubleheader, defeating the Astros at home, 2-1, and the Cardinals in Jupiter, 6-2, on Saturday.

📊 THE BOX SCORE:

  • At Cacti Park, CJ Abrams put the Nationals on the board with a bases-loaded walk in the fifth inning to tie the score at 1-1

  • This was Abrams’ second time reaching base after hitting a double down the right field line in his last at-bat

  • In the sixth inning, Jorgelys Mota smashed a 434 ft. home run over the centerfield wall, which ended up being the game-winner

  • After an unearned run scored off of starting pitcher Jake Eder in the second inning, the Nationals' bullpen combined for seven scoreless innings

  • The bullpen got 10 strikeouts and allowed just two hits to earn the win for the Nats

  • Also on Saturday, over in Jupiter, FL,  Max Romero Jr. led the Nationals' offense with a three-run homer in the fifth inning to extend Washington's lead over the Cardinals, 6-2

  • Trey Lipscomb reached base in all three of his plate appearances, doubling in the 1st inning before adding an RBI single in the 3rd and a walk in the 5th

  • Recent acquisition Isaac Lyon threw two perfect innings with three strikeouts in his Spring Training debut

    🗣️ LOCKER ROOM LORE

While it is only the first games of Spring Training, and a split-squad doubleheader at that, these two strong offensive and defensive showings project promise in this team. With a variety of players contributing on offense as well as the dominance of the Nats' bullpen on the other side of the ball, there can be real hope for the coming season, even if it is still very early.

    🗣️ LOCKER ROOM LORE

Today’s Phillies game presents a clear opportunity for the Nationals to show what they can do against a team that has proven that they can make a deep playoff run. While it may still be Spring Training, meaning that most teams won’t be playing all of their stars, this game could be a good showing for the team to show how much progress the rebuild has made since the end of last season.

💬 FAN’S CHOICE

How strong of a showing do you think the Nationals could put on against the Phillies this evening? How much will pitching play a role in the game?
