The Nationals get shut out for the first time in 2024 as they fall to the Phillies; 4-0

Washington D.C. - In the first Friday night home game of the 2024 season, the Washington Nationals suffered a 4-0 shutout against the Philadelphia Phillies. This marked the Nationals' first shutout of the 2024 season, and they managed only two hits throughout the game.

LHP Patrick Corbin started for the Nationals and pitched six innings, using 93 pitches and 65 strikes. After facing 30 batters, Corbin gave up four runs on nine hits, struck out six, and walked three.

Corbin was aiming to rebound from his first start of the season on Sunday against the Reds in Cincinnati. He pitched two additional innings compared to his last game yet still conceded the same number of runs. Moreover, he surrendered two more hits tonight.

The action kicked off immediately when Luis García Jr. ranged to his right, executing an impressive sliding play to rob J.T. Realmuto of a base hit and secure the final out of the first inning.

First baseman Joey Gallo made his own impressive play in the top of the second inning. Gallo lunged to make a diving stop, then swiftly raced to first base to record the out, preventing a run from scoring.

On the offensive front, the Nationals failed to score any runs in tonight's loss to the Phillies. They managed just two hits: a single from CJ Abrams following a double from Luis García Jr. on a sharp line drive to left fielder Brandon Marsh in the bottom of the fifth inning off RHP Aaron Nola.

CJ Abrams singled on a line drive to right fielder Nick Castellanos. Yet, when Abrams attempted to stretch the hit into a double, Castellanos swiftly threw him out at second base. The ball was then relayed to first baseman Bryce Harper and subsequently to shortstop Trea Turner. These plays concluded the Nationals' offensive output for the entire night, as they were unable to secure any further hits.

Bryce Harper's RBI single to right field, scoring Kyle Schwarber and extending the Phillies' lead to 4-0 in the 7th inning, ultimately sealed the Phillies' victory. The Nationals were unable to mount a comeback, falling short of even a close challenge.

The Nationals now have a record of 2-4, and tomorrow, they will continue their weekend series against the Philadelphia Phillies. The Nationals will send RHP Jake Irvin (0-0; 5.40 ERA) to the mound for his second game of the 2024 season. The Phillies will send LHP Ranger Suárez (0-0; 5.40 ERA) to face the Nationals also playing in his second game. On Sunday, to wrap up the series, the Nationals will send LHP MacKenzie Gore ( 0-0; 5.06 ERA) to the mound and will face their own left-handed pitcher from the Phillies: LHP Cristopher Sánchez (0-0; 3.60 ERA) vs.

MEMBER Question: What should the starting rotation look like?
