Nats return to health, return to winning, hold off Mets, 5-3

Inside an empty Nationals Park, there’s a hiccup of silence between contact, when ball meets wooden bat, and the next wave of fake crowd noise. The voices coming across the speakers and bouncing through the empty stadium were more high-pitched than usual. The Nationals have used several season-ticket holder videos as part of their game presentation during this fan-less season. But, this was different, as voices from dads, wives, sons, daughters and moms suddenly populated the video board, grabbing everyone’s attention.

Castro finds learning about new teammates tough during COVID-19

Nationals second baseman Starlin Castro is getting acclimated to his new teammates, even if that is made more difficult because of social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic.

“It’s kind of weird,” Castro said during a Zoom call late last week. “It’s kind of really weird. But the good thing is, we’ve got like what, two weeks, three weeks in spring training to meet each other, to meet all the guys before all these things get crazy. We keep talking. I try to keeping knowing all the guys, what they like, how they do, how they prepare. They had a really good season last year. So, I just continue learning from them and try to learn the most that I can.”

Dad strength! Trout HRs in first AB back

Angels superstar Mike Trout returned to the club on Tuesday with a new role in his life -- a father for the first time. But he also did something very familiar, as he homered yet again in a 5-3 win over the Mariners.

After missing four games to attend the birth of his son, Beckham Aaron, with his wife, Jessica, on Thursday, Trout rejoined the Angels for the opening game in Seattle and wasted no time getting back in action with a solo home run in his first at-bat, a 407-foot shot to center field. Trout now has 42 homers against Seattle, his most against one club, while his 25 homers are a record for visiting players at T-Mobile Park.
