Today, the Washington Nationals announced the 2021 coaching staff. Both President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo and Manager Dave Martinez made the joint announcement.

Here is the coaching staff for the Washington Nationals. The one coach that is missing from the list is former Paul Menhart.

  • · Tim Bogar — Bench Coach
  • · Randy Knorr — First Base Coach
  • · Bob Henley — Third Base Coach
  • · Kevin Long — Hitting Coach
  • · Jim Hickey — Pitching Coach
  • · Henry Blanco — Bullpen Coach
  • · Pat Roessler — Assistant Hitting Coach

Here is the backgrounds of each of the coaching staff who will part of Dave Marrtinez staff for the upcoming season.

Bogar, 53, returns for his fourth season on Dave Martinez’s staff, his second as the bench coach. He spent the previous two seasons (2018–19) as Washington’s first base coach. During his tenure with the Nationals, Bogar has worked extensively with Washington’s infielders. The 2021 season will mark Bogar’s 12th season as a Major League coach.

Knorr, 51, returns to the Major League staff for the first time since 2015, after spending the 2020 season leading the group of players at the Alternate Training Site (Fredericksburg). He managed Washington’s Triple-A affiliates in 2019 (Fresno) and 2018 (Syracuse) and prior to that, spent two seasons (2016–17) as a senior advisor in player development. This will mark Knorr’s fourth stint on the Nationals Major League staff. He served as bench coach from 2012–15 and the bullpen coach in 2009 as well as for the final three months of the 2006 season.

Knorr has been a part of the Washington Nationals organization since 2005, when he managed Single-A Savannah. From 2006–08, he managed Single-A Potomac, leading them to the Carolina League championship in 2008. He spent two seasons (2010–11) managing Double-A Harrisburg before re-joining Washington’s Major League staff in 2012.

Henley, 47, enters his 27th season with the Montreal/Washington franchise, 19th as a coach and eighth on the Major League staff. He will return to third base in 2021, after spending the 2020 season as Washington’s first base coach. Henley joined the Nationals Major League staff as third base coach in 2014. In 2018, he added additional responsibilities as Washington’s outfield instructor and has since been integral in the defensive development of Victor Robles and Juan Soto.

Long, 53, embarks on his fourth season as Washington’s hitting coach. Since joining the staff in 2018, Washington’s offense leads the National League in batting average (.260) and on-base percentage (.338). The Nationals rank among National League clubs in walks (2nd, 1,407), runs scored (3rd, 1,937), OPS (3rd, .774), doubles (3rd, 694) and slugging percentage (4th, .436) during Long’s tenure.

Blanco, 49, returns as bullpen coach, the role he has served since joining the Nationals in 2018. The 2021 season will mark Blanco’s seventh consecutive season coaching alongside Dave Martinez. The two also worked together while Blanco held the role as the Chicago Cubs’ quality assurance coach for three seasons (2015–17).

Roessler, 60, returns to the Nationals for his second season as the assistant hitting coach. He joined Dave Martinez’s staff in 2020, after spending the 2019 season as a player development advisor for the New York Yankees. He served as the Mets assistant hitting coach — under Kevin Long — for four seasons (2014–17), before being named the hitting coach for the New York Mets in 2018.
