Boston, MA - Tonight, the Washington Nationals kicked off their weekend series against the Boston Red Sox with a win, 5-1

The Nationals record is now 19-18.  The Nationals now have a winning record. The Nationals won their 9th over the last thirteen games and are 12-8 away from Nationals Park this season.

LHP Patrick Corbin went 5.0 innings tonight, giving up one run on seven hits. The south-paw threw 86 pitches, with 54 of them being strikes. He faced 22 batters tonight and got his first win of the season.

The big play defensively and the play of the game came right in the bottom of the first when Connor Wong singled on a line drive to right fielder Victor Robles, and thanks to a great throw from Robles, threw out Tyler O'Neill at home as he was trying to score. The Boston Red Sox stranded 11 base runners this evening and went 1-9 with runners in scoring position.

On offense, the Nationals scored five runs on eight hits. The Nationals quickly got on the scoreboard with two runs in the top of the second when Trey Lipscomb singled on a ground ball to right fielder Tyler O'Neill, scoring Keibert Ruiz and Eddie Rosario.

In the top of the third, the Nationals scored one thanks to a Joey Meneses single on a ground ball to second baseman Vaughn Grissom, which scored Luis García Jr. from third, giving the Nationals a 3-0 lead.

In the top of the ninth, thanks to aggressive base-running by Eddie Rosario after he singled and a Victor Robles two-out-RBI scoring Trey Lipscomb from second, the Nationals extended their lead to 5-1.

Before Rosario’s hit in the top of the ninth, 17 out of 19 Nationals batters were retired by Red Sox pitchers.

Next, the Washington Nationals will continue their weekend series with the Red Sox with the first pitch at 4:10 p.m., and the Nationals will send RHP Jake Irvin (2 - 3, 3.72 ERA) to the mound.

Injury Updates:

RHP Josiah Gray and RHP Cade Cavalli each throw a bullpen session on Friday afternoon.

• According to Manager Dave Martinez, RHP Josiah Gray threw 35 fastballs on Friday at Fenway Park. According to Martinez, 30 to 32 of the pitches were strikes.
• RHP Cade Cavalli, recovering from Tommy John surgery, pitched  a 45-pitch live bullpen session on Friday at the Nationals' training complex in Florida. The projected timeframe for the Nats' No. 5 prospect to return is mid-June.
