Washington Nationals Request Unconditional Release Waivers On Victor Robles

On September 7, 2017, CF Victor Robles debuted in Major League Baseball against the Philadelphia Phillies divisional rival. Robles became the youngest man to play in the 2017 Major League Baseball season and flew out to deep right field in a pinch-hit appearance.

Fast forward to the Washington Nationals’ 2019 season when Robles was named as a finalist for the NL Gold Glove Award in center field by leading all major league center fielders in assists, with 12, and all major league outfielders in errors, with six.

Now, the former Washington Nationals bright outfielder and the “too good to trade” for the possibility to trade for J.T. Realmuto back in 2019, Robles's career with the Nationals might be ending.

Last week, Washington DFA’d the 27-year-old outfielder, who was considered a big part of the National’s future when he made his MLB debut in 2017.

It’s been a long, strange trip. Robles was part of the outfield in 2019 and made some significant catches in the outfield during the playoffs.

Over his eight seasons with the Washington Nationals, Robles appeared in 530 games, had 1,834 plate appearances, 1,610 at-bats, 380 hits, 31 home runs, and a batting average of .236. But over the past few years, Robles has been hopping in between Triple-A and the majors due to performance or injury, and with the future strong young outfielders that are on the rise, the move by the team seemed to be coming soon.

Yesterday, the Talk Nats blog reported that the team was looking for a trade partner for Robles. However, Washington will now move on from Robles entirely since it appears no deal was found.

He only got into 36 games last year due to back spasms in the lumbar spine. He performed well on the field, hitting a solid .299/.385/.364, but hasn’t carried that over in 2024. He spent about a month on the injured list due to a left hamstring strain and has produced a brutal line of .120/.281/.120 in the 14 games he has played with the team.

It might be a good time for Robles to get a fresh start with another organization — if the 27-year-old outfielder can stay healthy.
