Today’s Top Story: Washington Nationals snap five-game losing streak, beat Braves 11-6

Last night was a microcosm of the Washington Nationals' season so far, right? Even though the Nationals snapped a five-game losing streak, it came with some bad news, which we will go into later. Before we go into what happened with right-hander Stephen Strasburg, here is a brief recap of last night's game.

The Washington Nationals' offense finally showed some signs of life by scoring 11 runs on 14 hits. What was a good sign was that the offense showed some consistency by scoring runs in the first, third, fourth, seventh and eighth innings. Juan Soto had a great night scoring four runs and had four RBIs, while Ryan Zimmerman hit a two-run home run, which was the sixth of the season in the fourth inning.

Additionally, Kyle Schwarber had one RBI and a single, while Yan Gomes continued to play well behind and at the plate. This time, Gomes scored two runs and hit a double. Gomes now has a total of 16 RBIs while Kyle Scharwber has a total of 25 RBIs this season. The Nationals only left seven baserunners, and the team went 4-16 with runners in scoring position. We will see if the Nationals' offense can continue tonight against the Braves in the third game of the four-game series.

On the mound, after coming into the game in the second inning, Austin Voth went three innings of relief, only giving up two runs on one hit. He struck out three and walked one. Hudson and Hand closed out the game with each having an inning of work despite the loop sided result.

The Nationals are still in last place in the NL East with a record of 22-29 and are six games back of the first-place New York Mets. The Nationals are also eight games back of a Wild Card Spot.

Okay, let’s talk about the elephant in the room - Stephen Strasburg...

Strasburg exits after throwing only 30 pitches over 1 ⅓ innings because of tightness

There were some early signs of trouble for the right-hander right from the start of the game, when he walked leadoff batter Ronald Acuña Jr. on four pitches. After that at-bat, Manager Davey Martinez and athletic trainer Paul Lessard made a visit to the mound after both of them noticed that Strasburg was trying to move his neck, and after a discussion, Strasburg told them that he wanted to try to throw through the stiffness.

During the offseason, we already believed that the Washington Nationals were at a crossroads and that a lot would be riding on the 2021 season. However, few of us thought that the decisive moments would come in June and July.
