Washington D.C. - Today, the Washington Nationals suffered their first series sweep of the 2024 season at the hands of the Los Angeles Dodgers as they lost 2-1.  The Nationals now have a record of 10-14 heading into another road trip.

Before the game started, there was a lineup change as the Nationals announced that Nick Senzel had been scratched from today’s lineup with a stomach illness. Keibert Ruiz also appeared in his first game, returning from the 10-day Injured List this afternoon, and he got the start behind home plate for the game. Ruiz went 0-4 today ( two flyouts, a ground out, and a strikeout)

For the Nationals, getting his latest start was LHP MacKenzie Gore. The only run he gave up was a Teoscar Hernández homer (6) on a fly ball to left-center field in the top of the second. Gore had a high pitch count as he threw 102 pitches, with 66 being strikes. Gore only gave up seven hits to a very powerful lineup. Gore was able to limit the damage as he shut down Shohei Ohtani as he went 0-3. Last night, Ohtani went 3-6 with three doubles.  Gore finished the day with a stat line of 6.0 IP, 7 Hits, 1 Run, 2 BB, 4 K, 1 HR, and faced 23 batters.

Reliever Jordan Weems gave up what turned out to be the winning run to Freddie Freeman in the top of the eighth as Freeman got an RBI double on a line drive to left fielder Ildemaro Vargas, scoring Mookie Betts from second base.

There wasn’t a lot of offense for the Nationals today as the Nationals were only able to get two hits off the Dodgers pitchers. RHP Yoshinobu Yamamoto got the start for the Dodgers and his first start against the Nationals in his career. Yamamoto went 6.0 shout-out innings, struck out seven, and walked only one batter.

However, the Nationals were able to pull within a run in the bottom of the ninth thanks to an RBI single from Joey Meneses's ground ball to center fielder Andy Pages, scoring CJ Abrams in the bottom of the eigth. (Meneses finished the day 3-4 with a 2B, RBI.)

However, the Nationals weren’t able to score in the bottom of the ninth as the Nationals went 1-2-3 with Joey Gallo and Trey Lipscomb striking out and Ildemaro Vargas grounding out shortstop Miguel Rojas.

Next, the Washington Nationals will kick off another road trip with a weekend series against the Miami Marlins starting tomorrow.
