Washington Nationals win 5-3 against the Pittsburgh Pirates

Washington D.C. - Today, the Washington Nationals earned their first home win of the 2024 season against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates suffered their first defeat of the season. The Nationals are now 2-3, with a chance to get to .500 tomorrow when they finish the series against the Pirates, with the Phillies coming to town at the end of the week.

RHP Trevor Williams got the start and the win for the Washington Nationals. Williams might have had the best start for the starting rotation so far this season.

Tonight, Williams pitched 5.1 innings, got five strikeouts, and gave up two runs on three hits. He also just walked two.

After tonight’s first start for Williams, he will have an ERA of 3.38, the best of the Nationals’ starting rotation the first time through.

The Nationals brought in Kyle Finnegan to close the game out for the Nationals after blowing a save his last time out. Kyle was able to get his second save of the 2024 season.

There was a lot of offense, at least on the Nationals side. Joey Gallo's first hit of the year was a home run to right center field that traveled an impressive distance of 447 ft, with an exit velocity of 109 mph and a launch angle of 34 degrees. Gallo ended the game 3-4 (Solo Home run, double, and a single).

Luis García Jr. had a great night at the plate, going 3-4 with three doubles, two runs, and an RBI.

Next, the Nationals will close out their series against the Pirates tomorrow with the first pitch at 4:05 p.m. The Nationals will send RHP Josiah Gray (0-1; 15.75) in search of his first win of the 2024 season. Gray pitched four innings, gave up seven earned runs on eight hits, striking out six and walking two against the Cincinnati Reds on March 28, 2024.

The Pirates will send 32-year-old southpaw Martín Pérez to the mound in his first start of the 2024 season.
