⚾⚾ The Morning Briefing: A's fans holding a reverse boycott

Good Morning Washington Nationals Fan,

Here are the latest headlines and analyses around the Washington Nationals and Major League Baseball for today, May 31, 2023. My name is Haden Raymer and this is your morning briefing. Today’s top story is Oakland A’s fans are holding a “reverse boycott”, demanding John Fisher sells the team.

Be sure to follow The Nats Report on Twitter for all the latest headlines and more.

Leading today’s Morning Briefing: Oakland A’s fans are having a reverse boycott

As many of you will know by now, John Fisher, the owner of the Oakland A’s, is trying everything he can to get out of Oakland and take the team to Las Vegas. He had the front office trade away quite literally every recognizable player on the roster to the point that the team was on pace to have one of the single worst seasons of all time.

Many A’s fans have become fed up and exhausted by this, and it shows in their attendance at the ball games. But that makes sense. The Oakland Coliseum is falling apart, to the point that a possum quite literally took over the visiting TV booth. The owner has publicly stated that he is trying to move the team to Las Vegas as soon as possible. Pair that with a historically bad team and it begins to add up.

In response to all this, a few A’s fans are trying to rally the fanbase in order to force Fisher to sell the team. Fans have made petitions, and have sent letters to other MLB owners. A literal member of Congress wrote to Rob Manfred asking him to stop involving himself in the negotiations.

And now they will all gather in the Coliseum tonight to show that fans still care. Melissa Lockard wrote for The Athletic a great dive into the rationale behind it. But essentially, fans will all gather today at the Coliseum wearing green shirts with the word sell on them. Before the game, there will be a tailgate with live music, and that is when the shirts will be handed out.

While it is highly unlikely any of this leads to Fisher selling (willingly or forced), it is highly admirable that the fans are taking this last stand. I wish them the best of luck tonight. The A’s take on the Tampa Bay Rays in tonight’s game. The A’s are on a six-game win streak, including a victory last night against the Rays.
