⚾⚾ The Morning Briefing: Jordan Weems recalled to major league roster

Good Morning Washington Nationals Fan,

Here are the latest headlines and analyses around the Washington Nationals and Major League Baseball for today, May 31, 2023. My name is Haden Raymer and this is your morning briefing. Today’s top story is the Nationals recalled Jordan Weems ahead of the series against Diamondbacks.

Be sure to follow The Nats Report on Twitter for all the latest headlines and more.

Leading today’s Morning Briefing: Jordan Weems promoted to the active roster

Reliever Jordan Weems was recalled following Andres Machado being designated for assignment. Weems threw 39.2 innings with the Nationals last season with a 5.22 ERA. Thankfully for him, his expected ERA sat at 3.39.

Weems won’t be a high-leverage arm for the Nationals, but hopefully, he has more success than Machado.

Nationals take on Arizona Diamondbacks

The Nats are taking on the Diamondbacks for the midweek series. Lefty Tommy Henry is on the mound for the Diamondbacks to face Jake Irvin for game one.

New Nationals’ top prospects list by FanGraphs

FanGraphs published their top 31 Nationals prospects list and it’s interesting, to say the least.

Here is Fangraphs’ updated Nationals top prospects rankings. They rank by FV (future value).

They have Elijah Green drop all the way to 11th on the list and have Drew Millas and Darren Baker climb to sixth and ninth respectively. Some of their arguments make sense. The fastball shape on a lot of these pitching prospects is suboptimal, but their digs on James Wood and Robert Hassell III seem reactionary, at least in my eyes. Green even has been moved out of center field in the long term in their eyes, making him a left fielder only. If he truly is a corner outfield-only prospect, then his ranking surely would take a massive tumble, but I haven’t seen anything to suggest that.

Let me know your thoughts on Twitter on this because I am curious to see what others think.

Down on the Farm

The Rochester Red Wings had the day off, but begin a six-game road series against the Worchester Red Sox tonight.

The Harrisburg Senators had an off day, but begin a six-game home series against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats tonight.

The Wilmington Blue Rocks also had the day off, and they also begin a six-game series on the road against the Greensboro Grasshoppers.

The FredNats complete the off-day sweep, and they begin a six-day series at home against the Charleston RiverDogs.
