⚾⚾ The Morning Briefing: Nats face a potential sweep

Good Morning Washington Nationals Fan,

Here are the latest headlines and analyses around the Washington Nationals and Major League Baseball for today, June 15, 2023. My name is Haden Raymer and this is your morning briefing. Today’s top story is the Nationals’ loss to the Astros so let’s dive into it.

Be sure to follow The Nats Report on Twitter for all the latest headlines and more.

Leading today’s Morning Briefing: Nationals lose to Houston Astros

Josiah Gray gave up four earned runs over seven innings with five strikeouts. He didn’t walk anybody, but he did give up two home runs. The Nats attempted a comeback in the top of the ninth, tieing the game 4-4.

That is when it went sideways. In the bottom of the ninth, Hunter Harvey allowed back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. They got Yainer Diaz to strike out, but then Harvey walked Corey Julks. In the final play, Jake Meyers hit a ground ball to CJ Abrams, who got the runner out at home. Keibert Ruiz attempted to turn the double play and threw it to first. The ball hit Meyers’ helmet, bouncing away from Michael Chavis at first, allowing the runner on second to score.

Davey was unhappy with the call there and argued that the runner was running too far out from the baseline, and should be called automatically out, similar to Trea Turner in the 2019 World Series. The umpire didn’t see it that way and the game was over with a 5-4 loss for the Washinton Nationals.

Davey Martinez is furious. He should be.
