Leading this Morning Briefing: Nationals shutout in game two

The Nats got just seven hits, with just one going for extra bases. That combination is not a recipe for scoring runs. CJ Abrams got the lone extra base hit, a double. Joey Meneses got three hits. Jesse Winker and Nick Senzel filled in for the rest of the hits.

And it’s a shame the Nationals could not do more offensively. Jake Irvin threw six shutout innings, striking out 10 Braves while issuing just two walks. That’s a career high in strikeouts for Irvin, who continues to shine after a solid but unimpressive 2023.

The Nationals have a new challenge tonight. The Braves will send forward RHP Spencer Schwellenbach to make his MLB debut. In eight starts across High-A and Double-A, Schellenbach has a 1.80 ERA over 45 innings. He allowed just one home run while striking out 51 and issuing 10 walks.

The Nationals will send out MacKenzie Gore to duel him. First pitch is at 7:20 p.m. ET and will be televised on MASN2.
