⚾️⚾️ The Morning Briefing: Nationals avoid a weekend sweep

Good Morning Washington Nationals Fan,

Here are the latest headlines and analyses around the Washington Nationals and Major League Baseball for today, September 11, 2023. My name is Haden Raymer, let’s dive into the news.

Leading today’s Morning Briefing: Nationals win one of three against the Dodgers

If there is a positive from this weekend’s set of games, it is the outfield defense. In game two the Nationals got a stellar play from each outfielder. Jacob Young made a catch up against the wall to rob a double, Jake Alu made a nice catch to save Hunter Harvey in the eighth, and Alex Call made a diving catch in the ninth.

You can read our full recap of the game here.

Outside of that, the Nationals had a tough series. There were what felt like 24 hours worth of rain delays. The pitching staff allowed 21 runs over the three games. MacKenzie Gore went on the injured list after game one. Joe La Sorsa had to throw 3.2 innings to get the Nationals out of game three. Thankfully, the Nationals have an easier game tonight, taking on the Pittsburgh Pirates.

First pitch is at 6:35 p.m. and will be televised on MASN2. Patrick Corbin will start for the Nationals. While no starter has been formally announced for the Pirates, RHP Andre Jackson is projected to get the start.

Down on the Farm: What happened last night with the Nationals Minor League teams

The Rochester Red Wings won two of three over the weekend against the Syracuse Mets. In last night’s 9-1 victory, Darren Baker went 4-6 with a double. Jeter Downs went 2-4 with a triple and a walk. Shortstop Jordy Barley went 2-4 with a walk and two stolen bases. First baseman Frankie Tostado got three hits, including a double, and walked.

The Harrisburg Senators lost all three of the weekend games to the Altoona Curve. In yesterday’s 5-4 loss, Dylan Crews doubled, James Wood walked and stole a base, and Robert Hassell III got three hits. DJ Herz struck out eight over four innings, allowing three earned runs. Catcher Wilmer Perez hit a two-run home run, his first of the year.

The Wilmington Blue Rocks won one of three against the Brooklyn Cyclones over their last three games of the season. Yesterday, in Wilmington’s 6-3 win, Yohandy Morales got two hits, including a triple. Daylen Lile went 2-4 from the leadoff spot, with a double and a walk. Sammy Infante had three hits. And of course, Andrew Pinckney got a hit. Fun fact, he’s only had six games where he failed to record a hit, including his one at-bat pro debut.

The FredNats won their last two games of the season over the Delmarva Shorebirds. In their season finale, they won 3-1 on just four hits. Johnathan Thomas went 2-4 with a stolen base, raising his season total to 65. Marcus Brown and Phillip Glasser recorded the other two hits. Elijah Green walked and stole two bases, raising his season total to 30, the second-highest by a FredNat this year. Cristhian Vaquero walked and stole one base.
