⚾️⚾️ The Morning Briefing: Nats sweep weekend games

Good Morning, Washington Nationals Fans,

Here are the latest headlines and analyses around the Washington Nationals and Major League Baseball for today, April 29.

Welcome to the Morning Briefing! Haden here. Let’s talk about this weekend’s games.

Leading this Morning’s Briefing: Nats win weekend games against Marlins

The Nationals offense scored 26 runs against the Miami Marlins this weekend. The team hit five home runs, with three coming from Nick Senzel. By the end of the weekend, Senzel had raised his OPS to .902. The numbers now show the Nationals having a strong offensive trio at the top of the lineup with CJ Abrams, Nick Senzel, and Jesse Winker. As a whole, the offense now ranks 16th in the league in OPS.

That is in part thanks to the new focus on getting on base. The offseason additions of Joey Gallo and Winker both excel at taking the free base, and while Gallo uses his walks to get himself to a barely acceptable OBP, Winker has a .400 OBP at the moment.

Ildemaro Vargas also continues to have a quietly good season, raising his OPS to .802 with two hits including a double on Sunday.

But with a roughly league-average offense and a top-four baserunning team, the Nationals have a decent offense. When James Wood and Stone Garrett return to provide some extra thump, anything is possible.

Nationals pitchers stay in a top-three spot in fWAR, even after Patrick Corbin’s blow-up start.

The Nationals stay in Miami another night as RHP Jake Irvin (1-2, 4.55 ERA) takes on LHP Trevor Rogers (0-3, 4.10 ERA). The game starts at 6:40 ET and will be on MASN2.
