⚾️⚾️ The Morning Briefing: Post-rainy day doubleheader

Good morning, Washington Nationals fans.

Here are the latest headlines and analyses around the Washington Nationals and Major League Baseball for today, May 14.

Welcome to the Morning Briefing! Haden here. Let’s talk about the weekend slate of games.

Leading this Morning’s Briefing: Doubleheader on slate for today

After some rain in Chicago yesterday, the Nationals will play in a doubleheader against the White Sox today. RHP Trevor Williams (4-0, 1.96 ERA) will get the ball for the Nationals, facing off against RHP Chris Flexen (2-3, 4.29 ERA) in game one.

LHP Mitchell Parker (2-1, 2.67 ERA) will get the start in game two against former Nat Erick Fedde (3-0, 3.00 ERA).

The White Sox have been bad this year. After trading away ace Dylan Cease and relievers Gregory Santos and Aaron Bummer, the White Sox are prepped to enter a rebuild for their rebuild. The 12-29 team ranks last in most offensive categories, like OPS, batting average, and runs scored. The rotation would likely be in the same spot if it were not for breakout seasons from Fedde and LHP Garrett Crochet. And while the Nats are facing some of the White Sox’s top arms, this series should end with the Nationals at a winning record.

Onto some quick injury updates. Jesse Winker may miss today’s games, but that will likely be the extent of the time he misses. Winker was pulled from Sunday’s game after attempting a diving catch, with back spasms cited as the reason for his removal.

Andrew Golden of the Washington Post reported that Joey Gallo will likely join the Nationals after this series in Chicago. The team placed Gallo on the injured list on April 26 with a shoulder injury. Even if the bat is still not at 100 percent, his glove in the infield will be a boon for the team.

After his red-hot series against the Red Sox, Eddie Rosario was rewarded with NL Player of the Week honors. He hit .467/.600/1.133 over the week while hitting three home runs. Funnily enough, his 0.7 fWAR in that span matched the -0.7 fWAR he had accumulated heading into the week, essentially wiping his slate clean on the year.
