Leading today’s Morning Briefing: Nationals have interest in Rhys Hoskins

Over the weekend, Andy McCullough of The Athletic predicted that Rhys Hoskins will end up a National while suggesting the Nationals have serious interest in signing him. This is in line with the Nationals seeking a middle-of-the-order bat in free agency. Hoskins has always made the most sense for the Nationals, as he fills the hole at first base that was left by Dominic Smith departing.

Two free agent arms are off the board

Over the past 24 hours, Kenta Maeda, 35, signed with the Detroit Tigers, and Sonny Gray, 34, signed with the St. Louis Cardinals. These two were two of the top options in the middle-tier of starting pitchers, with Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery the only two clear standouts left from this class.

With the only frontline starters remaining being the aforementioned Snell and Montgomery, the market will now begin to pivot to exploring trade options, including Tampa Bay’s Tyler Glasnow and the White Sox’s Dylan Cease.

Still, there are plenty of quality arms left on the free agent market, but all come with some form of question mark. Marcus Stroman is coming off a dreadful second half that was injury-shortened. Lucas Giolito has been largely inconsistent. James Paxton, Sean Manaea, and Hyun Jin Ryu all come with injury concerns.
